Glaciers and Erosion
A glacier is a slow-moving river of ice that flows downhill carried forward by gravity and its huge weight. This massive block of moving ice carves and changes the land beneath it. The ice and rocks dragged along underneath the glacier gouge deep into the ground, creating U-shaped valleys with steep sides and flat bottoms. The ice gets into cracks in the rocks, melts, refreezes, and breaks rocks apart. Glaciers carved out Yosemite Valley through the process of erosion from 1 - 3 million years ago.

JOHN MUIR: ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
John Muir decided he wanted to explore California. He traveled by sea and by land from New York to San Francisco, just like the 49ers looking for gold. By this time a railway went across Panama, so the journey was safer.
He traveled from San Francisco to the Yosemite Valley. He explored the valley and surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains. Muir visited the gigantic sequoias of the region and marveled at their incredible height. He spent time learning all about the magnificent landforms of the area. He wrote in a journal to describe the beauty he saw.
Muir believed glaciers created Yosemite Valley. Most scientists thought the valley was the result of earthquakes. Over time, Muir was proven correct.
John Muir wrote, “No temple made with human hands can compare with Yosemite” — and with good reason.
The park boasts spectacular granite formations, crystal-clear streams, majestic waterfalls, ancient giant sequoias, two major rivers (the Merced and Tuolumne), and much more.
Muir turned his efforts toward creating more national parks. In 1890, there was only one national park - Yellowstone. Muir wanted the Yosemite region to become a national park. Muir wrote many articles to newspapers and magazines and asked Congress for the establishment of a national park. In September of 1890, Congress passed a bill creating Sequoia National Park and in October, Yosemite National Park was also created.
In March of 1903 John Muir and President Teddy Roosevelt met and went camping high above Yosemite Valley. Muir took full advantage of the opportunity, calling for Roosevelt's help to save the trees and preserve the natural beauty of the region. Roosevelt was very impressed with Muir and, with his help, the number of national parks in America doubled.
